Swami Vivekananda's Visit to Goa - October 1892

In October 1892, during his extensive travels across India, Swami Vivekananda visited Goa to deepen his understanding of Christian theology and philosophy. His journey led him to Margao, where he was warmly received by Subrai Naik, a respected Sanskrit scholar. Naik's acquaintance in Belgaum had recommended that he host Swami Vivekananda

During his time in Goa, Swami Vivekananda spent three days at the Rachol Seminary, located near Margao. Here, he immersed himself in the study of Christian theological works, engaging in meaningful dialogues with the seminary's staff and students. Subrai Naik, fluent in Portuguese, facilitated these interactions by serving as an interpreter.

Beyond his scholarly pursuits, Swami Vivekananda also visited several prominent temples in Goa, including the Shantadurga Temple in Kavlem, the Mangueshi Temple in Mangeshi, and the Mahalsa Temple in Mardol. These visits underscored his respect for diverse religious traditions and his commitment to understanding various faiths.

Before departing Goa for Dharwad, Swami Vivekananda left a photograph of himself with Subrai Naik as a token of gratitude. This photograph remains a cherished memento within the Naik family. The room where Swami Vivekananda stayed in Margao has been preserved meticulously, with its original furniture and items intact, serving as a lasting tribute to his visit.

Swami Vivekananda's visit to Goa was a significant chapter in his journey of spiritual exploration and interfaith understanding. His engagements in Goa enriched his perspectives, contributing to the profound insights he later shared at the Parliament of the World's Religions in Chicago in 1893.
